Discovery Cruise - Sitka, AK to Petersburg, AK
This itinerary is for the Discovery Cruise from Sitka to Petersburg
(Unless listed, each day’s meals include: Breakfast, lunch, cocktails, dinner)
Day 1 - Sitka, AK (Please note, to ensure our vessel and crew are prepared for your cruise, please note, there is no early boarding)
Boarding of Ship at 1:30 PM. Cruise scheduled pick-up at airport 1:00 PM. Tour begins at 2:30 PM at the Russian Orthodox Cathedral, and includes the Raptor center, Totem Park, and the Sheldon Jackson museum. Then come aboard the Island Spirit for cocktails and dinner as we depart for our evening anchorage. Enjoy beautiful scenery along the way. (if staying at specific local hotels, we have scheduled pick-ups of luggage, you can meet us for our tour at 2:30 PM, or you may choose to get transportation to the Eliason Marina Dock for boarding at 1:30 PM. (Cocktails, Dinner)
Day 2 - Cruising and Exploring
Experience more of the great wilderness as we cruise to a local bay for kayaking or exploring. Tonight we’ll enjoy a serene evening away from the crowds. Maybe we’ll take our skiff in search of bears foraging on the beach.
Day 3 - Remote Tenekee Springs, AK
Today we visit the small community of Tenekee springs. Enjoy a stroll to the bakery and the local mercantile. Chat with locals for an interesting Alaskan afternoon. Our onboard naturalist will educate and entertain you on our walk in the rainforest. Haul anchor and cruise north through Chatham Strait. Look for Humpback Whales along the way. We port tonight at the native community of Hoonah.
Day 4 - Hoonah, AK
After Breakfast we’re off for a Native experience. Visit the Icy Strait Point “Historic Salmon Cannery”. Enjoy a “Tlingit” cultural experience arranged for your education and entertainment. There’s time for a forest walk or even a thrilling adventure, as you might embark on the optional, world’s longest Zip Line. Later this afternoon we depart Hoonah, cruising East for Juneau, AK.
Day 5 - Juneau, Alaska’s Capitol
After breakfast, we take a visit to Juneau. There’s time to explore Alaska’s Capital. Perhaps you’ll enjoy an optional adventure: You could take an optional visit to the Mendenhall Glacier, ride the Juneau tram or visit the old gold mine. Enjoy the day and be back on board for a 3 PM departure. We’re off to new vistas, cruising southbound in Stephens Passage.
Day 6 - Majestic Fjords Terror
Cruising includes: Endicott Arm, Dawes Glacier and Fords Terror. This region is some of the most scenic in the Tongass National Forest. Fords Terror is one of the most majestic hidden Fjords in SE Alaska and we are the only Small Ship that spends an evening here at anchor! Captain's Dinner tonight. Be among a handful on the planet to visit this Majestic Fjord. Kayak in this wilderness
Day 7 - Cruising and Exploring
Heading south in Stephens’s passage we will again be looking for Humpback whales as they feed and play in the local waters. If weather permits, we may have a chance to visit the oldest lighthouse in S.E. Alaska. Our anchorage tonight will be in Farragut or Portage bays. (Brunch, Cocktails, Dinner)
Day 8 - Petersburg, AK & Baird Glacier
Today we may visit Thomas Bay and Baird Glacier. Depending on the tides, we'll ride among the ice bergs and take a hike on the beach. Close enough to touch, you'll be amazed by this landscape. Later today, we make our way into the fishing community of Petersburg. You might enjoy the muskeg walk as we learn a bit about the Scandinavian culture.
Day 9 - Flights home, depart Petersburg, AK
We share our last breakfast aboard the Island Spirit followed by transfers for flights home. (Please note, we are in port the evening before departures to accommodate early flights. Please note, all guests are required to disembark by 12:00 pm. so we may ready the vessel for our next cruise). (Breakfast)
